Joyce E. B. Backus

Joyce E.B. Backus is Deputy Chief of the Public Services Division at the National Library of Medicine (NLM).  The Division is responsible for interlibrary loan, DOCLINE, preservation, collection management, NLM’s main web site, and MedlinePlus. She has been with the NLM since her 1985/86 Associate Fellowship and served in many roles including reference librarian, systems librarian, web team leader, and Head of the Reference and Web Services Section.  Joyce has led groups responsible for MedlinePlus among other NLM products and services.  Joyce has served on the NLM/MLA Leiter Lecture Committee and MLA’s Task Force on Information Literacy.  She has also received the Thomson Scientific/Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award and the Ida and George Eliot Prize from MLA.  

 

Connie Schardt

Connie Schardt is the Associate Director for Public Services - Education Services at the Medical Center Library, Duke University in Durham, NC. She is the current President of the Medical Library Association and past Chair of both the MidAtlantic Chapter and Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA. Connie has been involved with Evidence-Based Medicine since coming to Duke in 1997.  For the last 8 years she has co-directed Teaching and Leading EBM: A Workshop for Teachers and Champions of Evidence Based Medicine held annually at Duke University and since 1999 has taught a distance online course in EBM for medical librarians.  A Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, Connie was awarded the Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award in 2006 and named MAC Librarian of the Year in 1997.
